Summary
I-News Vol.6 reveals the current picture of pet owners in Japan, Korea and China. While the ratio of whether respondents own pets in the three countries is very similar, kinds of pets, locations they obtained from and reasons they keep pets vary across the countries.

Dogs turned out to be the most common pet among the three countries;49%, 80.4%, and 75.5% of the respondents in Japan, Korea and China respectively answered to be dog owners.

In Japan, cats are the second and fish are the third popular pets to own.

Fish seem to be relatively popular in China; As many as 45% of Chinese respondents answered that they own fish whereas only 25.3% and 15.3% in Japan and Korea respectively keep fish.

Cats seem to be not so popular in Korea;only 10% of respondents said they own cats whereas 28.5% and 39.6% of respondents in Japan and China respectively answered they own cats.

In all three countries, dogs are the pet that respondents keep for the longest period. |
• Question 4 : Where do you obtain the pet from? (single choice)

Approximately 80% of the respondents in all three countries obtained pets by purchasing them at pet shops or receiving them from friends.

In Japan, purchasing at pet shops is the most common (48.4% of Japanese claim) while in Korea and China, taking over from friends is the most common way of obtaining pets.(62.7% and 57.4% of Korean and Chinese respondent answered so)

It is interesting to remark that as many as 13.9 % of Japanese respondents say they bring pets into the house and especially 19.3% of Japanese female said so. |

Across the three countries, the main reason to keep pets seems to be because pet owners and their family members specifically like the animal.

In China, "because he/she is very helpful for security" is the third common reason to keep pets;as many as 20.8% of respondents remark that.

In addition, Chinese parents seem to favor heavily pets because it is beneficial for their child's education |
• Question 6 : Where is a breeding place for pet? (single choice)

In Japan and Korea, it is distinct that Indoor (living rooms) is the most common place to breed pets;59.5% and 67% of Japanese and Korean respondents respectively answered so.

On the other hand, in China, Indoor (except living rooms) is the most common place to keep pets. |
