Summary
I-News Vol.7 will explore the purchasing patterns and concerns of pet owners in Japan, China and Korea. Some respondents in particular countries seem to have pets for longer periods, while others tend to spend more money on pets. Concerns among pet owners vary across the countries.
The volume also reveals the opinions of non pet owners.

Overall, Japanese pet owners seem to keep their pets for a longer period than Korean and Chinese.

The length of time people keep animals depends on the kind of pet.

When paying attention to dog owners, those in Japan seem to keep dogs longer than in Korea and China; More than 54% of Japanese answered that they have had dogs for more than 5 years, whereas only 25% and 23% of respondents in Korea and China respectively claimed to have done so. |
•Question 2 : How much do you spend on average for the pet per month?

In all countries, dog owners seem to spend the most money among all pet owners.

It is likely that Korean respondents spend the most money among the three countries; More than 32% of them spend over $50 per month on pets comparing to 27% and 14% in Japan and China. |
• Question 3 : Have you bought the following pet accessories for the pet? (multiple choice)

Looking at dog owners,

In Japan, the popular accessories to purchase are collars (77%), toys (63%) and houses (60%).

In Korea, the most popular accessories to purchase are clothes (65%) followed by toys(58%) and collars(58%)

Among Chinese respondents, collars (68%) are the most popular accessories to purchase followed by toys (55%) and clothes(47%).
Among cat owners,
- Toys are the most popular accessories to purchase in Japan and China whereas furniture is the most popular purchasing item in Korea.

• Question 4 : What concerns you most about your pet(s)?(multiple choice)

Speaking of dog owners,

Among the three countries, dog owners in Japan worry most that their pet(s) will die some day; 44% of them think so, whereas Korean respondents seem to be concerned least about the death of their pet(s).

Instead, Korean respondents are most concerned about daily routines such as cleaning and bath/brushing.

The top concern for Chinese respondents is to clean (47% of them claimed so ) followed by the death of their pets.
Talking about cat owners,

Concerns for cat owners in Japan are similar to those for dog owners in Japan; as many as 52% of respondents are concerned about the death of their pets.

Korean and Chinese respondents hold similar concerns such as cleaning and bath/brushing. |
• Question 5 : If you compare the pet to a person around you, who the following will be the most right person? (single choice)

In general, Japanese tend to consider pets as their child(ren) or grandchild(ren) while Chinese seem to consider as their friends.

Interestingly, as many as 35% of cat owners in Korea regard cats as a brother or sister. |
• Question 6 : Why don't you have any pet(s)?(multiple choice)

The main reason respondents do not have pets are for sanitary concerns in Korea and China while in Japan it is the difficulty of taking care of the animal in Japan.

As many as 31% of Japanese non-owners claimed that they do not have pets because it is prohibited in their residing property comparing to 9% and 18% of Korean and Chinese respondents respectively.

Rejection by other family members and high costs are the major reasons for Koreans to not own pets. |
• Question 7 : Which of the following pet(s) do you like to have in the future? (multiple choice)

Dogs are popular among Japanese and Koreans;42% and 60% of non-owner respondents in Japan and Korea answered that they would like to have one in the future, while fish are the most popular among Chinese.

Approximately 40% of Japanese non-owners answered that they are not interested in having pets in the future either.

On the other hand, more Chinese non-owners seem to be interested in having pets in the future. |
