Summary
 
This issue of I-News will continue to reveal the perceptions in 5 Asian countries towards the environmental issues. We have found different positions and behaviors across the countries. 
 
         
   
  
Question 1 : Which of the following issues are important to you? (multiple choices)
         

                                                                                                                  
  • “Global warming” and “Environment contamination” are the major important issues in each country.
  • In China, about 78% of respondents answered that they are concerned about “Food contamination”. 
  • In all countries, except Japan, “Resource exhaustion” is one of the top issues of concern.
  • In Japan (54%) and Korea (42%), more respondents are concerned about “Recycling issue”, compared to other countries.
       
   
 •Question 2 : Which of the following is the most serious environmental issues to you?(single choice)     
                 

                                                                                                         
  • Across the counties, the top issue is “Air pollution” followed by “Water pollution”.
  • Especially in Hong Kong, as many as 78% of the respondents claimed that “Air pollution” is the most serious issue.
  • In Korea (40%) and China (35%), larger percentage of the respondents are anxious about “Water pollution”.
  • 23% of Japanese respondents said “I do not know”.
 
 
• Question 3 : Do you prefer to purchase products made by companies who contribute to environmental conservation? (single choice)  
           

     
  • Among the 5 countries, Chinese respondents showed the most interest; approximately 95% answered that they strongly prefer or they prefer green companies.
  • On the other hand, the Japanese showed the least interest; approximately 64% of answered that they strongly prefer or they prefer environmentally friendly companies.
  
 
• Question 4 : Do you prefer to purchase products that are made environmentally friendly, but a bit more expensive if the functions are the same? (single choice)                 
           

                 
  • The similar answer trend as Q3 were reveled. The Chinese showed the most interest while the Japanese least.
  • Approximately 84 % of Chinese respondents answered that they strongly prefer or they prefer green products.
 
 
 • Question 5 : What type of alternative transportation habits do you practice in order to preserve the environment? (multiple choices)         
          

                     
  • In all countries except, Japan, ‘Walk or use a bicycle instead” is the top choice.
  • In China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, “Carpool” and “Turn off the car engine while stopped “ are common practices; Over 40% of the respondents answered that they do so.
  • 37% of Japanese respondents said “I do not know”.
 
 
 • Question 6 : Are you considering to purchase a hybrid car for your next automobile?(single choice)    
      
                                    
  • Chinese respondents showed the most interest in purchasing a hybrid car; approximately 73% stated that they strongly consider or consider.
  • Taiwanese (61%) and Korean (58%) follow.
  • Approximate 1/4 of the respondents in Japan and Hong Kong answered that they do not have plans to purchase a car.
